Submarine I-400/I-404

The submarines I-400 and I-404 were large submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Built as submarine aircraft carriers capable of carrying three attack aircraft for the purpose of bombing the American mainland, the I-400 class was also known as the Special Submarine class and was a top-secret weapon of the Imperial Japanese Navy.

Initially, 18 identical submarines were planned to be built, but in the end, only I-400, I-401, and I-402 were completed by the end of the war. Towards the end of the war, I-400, having completed repairs for damage sustained in the March air raid on Kure, sortied with its sister ships I-401 and I-14 to attack the Allied Ulithi Atoll, but surrendered after Japan's defeat, and was subsequently scuttled by the American forces off the coast of Hawaii.

Furthermore, the I-404, which was intended to be the fourth ship, was being built in Kure, but construction was halted just before completion. It was hit and severely damaged during the air raid on Kure Naval Base in July 1945 and subsequently scuttled
